Untitled (Music in Motion) is a series of indexical prints that translate sound into gesture. Drawn to the unique voices of different instruments, I have personally played or attempted several string instruments, including violin, mandolin, guitar, and ukulele. These experiences inform the way I think about how music is produced and felt.

Music exposes a spectrum of emotion—both harmonious and dissonant—and I wanted to investigate this through brushwork. While listening to Gustav Holst’s St. Paul’s Suite, I let the composition dictate the rhythm, pressure, and direction of my marks. The resulting 8.5” x 11” ink on watercolor paper prints are scaled to foster an intimate encounter. The lines can be read like sheet music, inviting the viewer to approach the work as though they are about to play it.
