Out of This World is an accordion book created from photographic images combined with chemograms produced in the darkroom. I chose this format so viewers can experience the images both individually and as a continuous nightscape when the book is fully extended.

On the reverse side of the book, there are eight planets plus the sun, using imagery produced by NASA and sourced from their website. The spacing between the planets is meant to suggest the vast distances between them in space, while the black background evokes the void of the cosmos.

The chemograms were made in the darkroom, where I experimented with plastic, tape, glass, and chemicals to construct fictional nightscapes using unnatural materials. The covers are made from colorful handmade paper adhered to book board; this paper echoes the look of a vibrant galaxy and, paired with the hardcover structure, gives the book a more finished, substantial presence.

I selected the trim size so that viewers can easily see the details in the images; it also roughly matches the original print dimensions. The title, Out of This World, refers both to the alien-like landscapes and to the planetary imagery within the book.
