The Grimm Brothers were cultural researchers who went around Germany to collect folk tales. They recorded the stories and published them in a two-volume book. Over the years the stories have shifted and changed making them less grotesque and more appropriate for children. With this project I have researched stories from the first volume of The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm: The Complete First Edition.
Grimm Tales is an investigation of creating a fairytale in one image. I place props in corresponding surroundings based on their story. Each prop is specific and symbolizes something from within the story. Creating photographs with a DSLR camera then editing them in Adobe Photoshop to make the photos into negatives. I have printed the negatives on mylar to make kallitypes. Using the kallitype process it reflects the old fashion of the classic tales as well as the process. It also contradicts with the digital photography and editing of the images. All of the images are printed on BFK Reeves paper and were exposed under a UV light for 15 minutes. For the final product, the kallitypes are combined into a hand-made book using Japanese binding method with red thread.
